About the Artist

'Cole Franciola grew up in Saratoga Springs, New York. While in high school she took a series of ceramic art classes, she became quite smitten. She then decided to go to Alfred University to pursue her passion of making functional pottery. It took her some time to find her niche of making multiples of dinner plates. She is now going to take some time off from school but plans on enrolling in a graduate program in the upcoming year or two. She will continue to make work in the mean time. If you are interested in anything you see here feel free to email 'Cole at Colefranciola@gmail.com.

Artist Statement

My pottery addresses the notion of utility. The daily use of a dinner set is my main focus. A question in my work is coordination; I believe it is the ornament that links the individual pieces into a set, despite the difference between forms. What relates these pieces is the idiosyncratic repetitions of ornament layered with changing accent colors overtop.

I ornament each piece intuitively, a decision based on my own ideas of aesthetics. I want to create moments of clarity versus moments of complexity within the ornament by layering surfaces. To achieve this I perfectly apply some flowers and then I allow colors to flow over top of other flowers. It is my hope that the layered surfaces will keep the viewer’s eye moving
